1 Diaper
A fine quality of linen fabric formerly manufactured in the city of Ypres. It was highly esteemed in England in the 13th century. The peculiarity of the cloth of Ypres was, like that of Damascus, in the pattern; as the term " to diaper " is still in heraldry employed to signify the covering of the field of an escutcheon with scroll or lattice-work, flowers or other devices independently of the armorial bearings. " Diapering is a term in drawing. It chiefly served to counterfeit, cloth of gold, silver, damask, velvet, camblets, etc." Cloths so woven in ornamental patterns were therefore called diapers. -
2 Diamond Draft Diaper

3 Russian Diaper
Diaper fabrics made of linen yarns having a double diamond pattern of larger size than the Irish diapers. It is made in four sizes 21-in., 24-in., 26-in. and 33-in. -
4 Bird's-Eye Diaper
Diapers made of linen or cotton and so called after the small design used, viz., the " Bird's-eye pattern." -
5 Diamond Linen
An Irish term for diaper cloths, made of flax yarns in small diamond designs. -
6 Diapers
The original diaper was of linen, and based on the 5-end sateen weave, woven on the damask principle. The cloth has a smooth, even surface. M shows one form of diaper design, but the design N based on the 8-end sateen, shows the correct method of producing these effects. Cotton diapers are now made and used for towels. Two or three-fold warp is usual, such as 2/16's, 3/24's, with 8's weft. In the cheaper qualities a single yarn 16's is used. The term is also applied to pattern and indicates rectangular shapes either uniform or varied in size and shape and repeated all over the fabric. Diapers like huckabacks are very ancient. They are largely used for toilet purposes. The following are fairly standard: - 3 shaft, 1,200 set X 13 shots, 40's/45's linen. 4 shaft, 1,400 set X 14 shots, 50's/50's linen. 5 shaft, 1,500 set X 15 shots, 40's/45's linen -
